We have been extending on our Centre philosophy of using the book "Rainbow in my heart" to support the tamariki with sharing their emotions by contributing a colour to it.
In the Nursery we have discussing these emotional colours at mat-times and during "big feelings" moments - as well as having the prompt cards and many rainbows displayed throughout the rooms.
The tamariki have been showing an interest in music and movement recently, and we have weaved the two aspects together to better support the tamariki with using the colours to share their feelings. We introduced the rainbow ribbons into our outdoor music session and the tamariki loved waving them in the air along to the music.
The older children invited the younger pepi to join in by sharing their ribbons with them and demonstrating how to wave them around. To extend on this experience, we then hung some ribbons on the washing line and invited the tamariki to run through them and feel them stroking their faces on the way through. This led to lots of giggles and squeals of excitement as the tamariki took turns going through, and at times giving the ribbons a tug as they twisted in the rainbows.
A fun way to support the children with sharing, building their relationships and gaining confidence to try new experiences.
