From Eggs to Frogs: A Playful Journey of Discovery.

Recently, our tamariki celebrated International Frog Day, where excitement filled the classroom as both children and teachers became part of the learning experience.

The teachers dressed up as different stages of the frog life cycle; eggs, tadpoles, tadpoles with back legs, froglets, and fully grown frogs - bringing the concept to life in a fun and engaging way.

The children eagerly joined in, dressing as frogs, hopping, leaping, and immersing themselves in imaginative play. This shared experience sparked curiosity and led to deeper exploration. The children were drawn to our Montessori life cycle materials, carefully sequencing each stage and beginning to understand how tadpoles grow and change over time. Seeing their teachers represent each stage helped make these ideas more concrete, supporting children to visualise and connect each part of the life cycle.

As their interest grew, the children engaged in rich discussions, sharing their ideas and observations with one another. They began to use new vocabulary and showed increasing confidence in explaining what happens at each stage. This is a wonderful example of how Montessori encourages learning to extend beyond the initial experience. What began as playful dress-ups naturally evolved into meaningful scientific discovery.

Our carefully prepared environment supports this type of learning, offering children opportunities to explore concepts through hands-on materials, movement, and social interaction. By integrating imaginative play with structured Montessori resources, children are able to build a deeper and more lasting understanding.

Through this experience, children also developed a growing appreciation for the natural world. They began to recognise that all living things go through changes, fostering respect and curiosity for life cycles and living creatures. This learning connects with the concept of kaitiakitanga, as children begin to understand their role in caring for the environment. Moments like these remind us that learning is most powerful when it is joyful, meaningful, and shared.

By engaging alongside the children, our teachers help create rich, memorable experiences that support curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning. We look forward to many more days of discovery - one hop at a time
