At BestStart Balclutha, our Tomene ōku Wāhi group is all about connection, exploration, and belonging. Each week, our adventurous 4-year-olds head out into the community, proudly wearing their green vests as they become visible, confident members of the world around them.

Our excursions are filled with curiosity and discovery.

Tamariki are fascinated as they explore new environments, stopping to observe and wonder. At the aviary, we spend time looking closely at birds in an enclosure, with kaiako supporting conversations, asking questions, and encouraging children to share their ideas.

These moments spark curiosity and help tamariki make sense of the world around them. Being out in the community provides rich opportunities to strengthen social and emotional competence. Tamariki learn to stay together as a group, take turns, listen carefully, and support one another. These shared experiences build strong friendships and a sense of collective responsibility.

We also see wonderful growth in self-regulation. From walking safely alongside their friends, to managing excitement in new environments, and following routines like stopping, waiting, and listening-our tamariki are developing the skills they need to navigate the world with confidence. Sometimes we take along a snack.

Sitting under the trees, enjoying kai, and engaging in relaxed conversation creates a strong sense of whanaungatanga. These moments help tamariki feel secure, connected, and valued as part of the group. When we visit the library, tamariki enjoy quiet time with stories, cuddling up with books and soft toys. This balance of active exploration and calm, reflective time supports their overall wellbeing and love of learning.

Through Tomene ōku Wāhi, we bring to life the Te Whāriki strand of Mana Whenua – Belonging. Tamariki experience an environment where they know they have a place, where their voices are heard, and where connections with the wider world are nurtured and celebrated.

Our philosophy of “Your whānau, our whānau” is woven throughout these experiences. As tamariki explore their community, they are not only learning about the world, they are learning that they are an important part of it. We are so proud of the confidence, curiosity, and care our tamariki show each time we step out together
