A hands-on science experience sparked curiosity and learning for our tamariki! Through seed germination, they explored plant growth, made predictions, recorded their observations, and strengthened the skills they’ll take with them to primary school.
Our preschoolers recently took part in a hands-on science project: Germinating Seeds.
This fun and engaging activity helped them explore how plants grow and what they need to survive — sunlight, water, and care.
Together, we observed different types of seeds and plants, including garlic, capsicum seeds, carrot tops, and beans. From the very first day, our tamariki were curious and excited to see what would happen.
Each morning, they looked closely at the changes — tiny roots growing longer, leaves beginning to form, and colours slowly changing as the plants developed.
Our tamariki recorded their observations using simple drawings and shared their thoughts in group discussions. They described what they noticed, explained why they thought the changes were happening, and even made predictions about what might come next.
Their drawings showed great attention to detail — capturing the shape of the leaves, the length of the roots, and the colour changes from day to day.
We are so pleased to see how this project supported sensory exploration, communication, and an early understanding of plant growth.
Our tamariki practised important school-ready skills such as observation, focus, patience, and clear communication. These are the skills they’ll carry with them to primary school and into their future learning journey.
