Getting Out & About in the Community
Over the last few months, the 2-5 year olds at BestStart Rangiora have been venturing out to visit our local library and one of the rest homes near by, Bainswood on Victoria. These excursions have been so meaningful and enjoyable for the tamariki and have been the result of looking into our local curriculum. Community is a large part of local curriculum - all of us at preschool are a part of our local community, but who/what else is?
To extend this learning, we thought there is no better way to learn more than getting out and about within the Rangiora area. Venturing out beyond preschool gives tamariki a sense of belonging as an individual member of their local area and gives them a chance to start making these connections between home, preschool and the wider community. Children are often asking when we are going out again and very much look forward to these trips. Visiting the Rangiora Library for some stories and songs has been so special. We have been able to socialise with some new friends, big and small, and be a part of a wider group, as well as visit a place that many children also visit with their whānau.
Afterwards, we usually have enough time to go for a play on the big playground too. More recently, we have begun taking the whole Kea classroom to Bainswood. This has meant that every tamaiti has had a chance to participate. We have been performing a variety of songs for the residents as well as presenting them with different artwork to keep to remember us by until next time. We love our little trips into the community!
