At BestStart Pipiwai Kindy, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens over time—through experiences that cannot be rushed. Our apple tree journey has been a beautiful reflection of this, offering our tamariki the opportunity to grow not only fruit, but also patience, responsibility, and a deep sense of connection to the natural world.
From the very beginning, planting and caring for our apple trees required nurturing hands and hopeful hearts. Together, we watered, observed, and cared for the trees, learning that growth does not happen overnight. Through the changing seasons, our tamariki experienced what it means to wait, developing patience as they checked on the trees each day and noticed small but significant changes along the way.
This journey has strongly reflected our centre’s beliefs around fostering kaitiakitanga—caring for and respecting our environment. Tamariki took ownership of the trees, understanding that their actions had an impact. They showed responsibility, gentleness, and pride in contributing to something bigger than themselves.
When the apples began to grow, there was a shared sense of excitement and accomplishment. The anticipation built as we watched them ripen, knowing that soon we would be able to harvest the fruit of our collective effort. Harvest day was filled with joy, as tamariki carefully picked the apples, recognising the reward of their patience and care.
The learning did not stop there. Bringing the apples inside, we extended this experience into our kitchen space. Together, we peeled, prepared, and cooked apple muffins, transforming what we had grown into something we could share and enjoy. This process supported a range of skills, from fine motor development to following steps and working collaboratively.
Most importantly, it reinforced the concept of connection—from garden to table, from effort to reward, and from individual contribution to shared celebration. As a centre, we value creating meaningful, hands-on experiences that nurture the whole child.
This journey has supported not only practical life skills but also social competence, communication, and emotional development. Tamariki worked together, shared ideas, and celebrated their success as a community.
Our apple tree journey is a reminder that when we slow down and allow space for growth, we are nurturing more than just plants—we are nurturing curious, capable, and connected learners. We look forward to continuing this journey, building on our shared experiences, and creating more opportunities for tamariki to learn through doing, caring, and being together.
