Spring comes alive at BestStart Epsom! Tamariki planted seeds, watched them grow, and learned to care for Papatūānuku. Through this hands-on experience, they nurtured curiosity, responsibility, and a deep connection to the natural world.

As we move into Koanga (spring), our tamariki at BestStart Epsom have been connecting with nature and exploring the magic of growth. Guided by our local curriculum, we aim to help children develop a deep sense of connection to Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) and understand how she nurtures all living things.

This month, our tamariki took part in a seed-sowing experience that brought the wonder of spring to life. Together, they prepared small pots, gently placed the tiny seeds inside, and covered them with soil. Over the following days, children eagerly checked their cups each morning, noticing the first signs of green sprouting through the soil.

Through this hands-on learning, they discovered how something so small can grow into something strong and beautiful when cared for with patience and love. This simple yet powerful activity symbolised the life cycle and reminded us of the amazing power of nature.

It also supported tamariki to build their understanding of kaitiakitanga — caring for our environment — as they watered the seedlings and made sure each plant received enough sunlight. These moments helped nurture curiosity, responsibility, and respect for the living world around them.

At BestStart Epsom, experiences like seed-sowing are part of our local curriculum, which values connecting children to the natural environment, the changing seasons, and the stories of our place. As our little seeds continue to grow, so do our tamariki — learning to observe, wonder, and care for the world they are part of.
