Each year, our understanding of Matariki deepens, and we really immerse ourselves in its rich cultural significance. The process of learning about Matariki is a cultural experience as we uncover its stories, customs and rituals.

The journey of embracing the essence of Matariki strengthens our connections to Māori culture. We celebrate Matariki by coming together, fostering a deeper connection and building lasting memories through storytelling, crafting, waiata and sharing kai with the whānau. Kotahitanga (togetherness) is really felt through our Matariki event as our team got an opportunity to connect and further enhance our relationships with whānau.

We celebrated our tamariki along with whānau, as they also prepared a special performance singing different waiata. We also got to enjoy making stars using various resources. The different stars each represents the different areas where we get food for example, ocean (Waitā) and garden (Tupuānuku). This is significant as our event went with this years theme of “Matariki Heri Kai.”

This theme comes from the Māori proverb ‘Matariki whetū heri kai’ that means ‘Matariki, the bringer of food.’ Matariki provided us with rich opportunities to infuse our lives with Māori culture and celebrate the beauty of our shared heritage.
