Our tamariki honoured ANZAC Day with poppy art, stories, and meaningful reflection, learning the values of courage, remembrance, and empathy through hands-on and heart-filled activities.
This month, our tamariki at BestStart Epsom joined together to commemorate ANZAC Day with activities designed to nurture understanding, respect, and remembrance.
ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices made by the soldiers and nurses who served our country. We embraced this opportunity to introduce its significance to our children in thoughtful and creative ways.
In our Kōwhai room (under 2s), our youngest learners explored the meaning of the poppy – a symbol of remembrance – through a hands-on art experience. Using red paper and soft black playdough, tamariki made their own poppy flowers, engaging in sensory play while learning about this important tradition. We also created a special memorial wall display, providing a quiet visual space to reflect on the occasion.
In our Pōhutukawa room (over 2s), tamariki participated in group discussions and art activities centred around ANZAC Day. They listened carefully as their kaiako shared age-appropriate stories, asked meaningful questions, and proudly created red poppies to display around the centre.
This shared experience provided a beautiful opportunity to foster empathy, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of our history – values we are proud to support every day.
Lest we forget.
