At BestStart Rototuna, our centre vision, “Inspire Growing Minds” guides everything we do.

In our toddler class, this comes to life through rich, hands-on experiences that spark curiosity, independence, and confidence.

One of the ways we nurture this is through our Toddler Chef Programme, where even our youngest tamariki take the lead in preparing their own kai.

As part of this programme, tamariki help with simple food preparation tasks in a safe and supportive environment. With close supervision from our kaiako and centre cook, they take part in meaningful activities such as peeling ngā huawhenua (vegetables) for soup, spreading butter or homemade jam on toast, and scooping their own kai. These experiences are full of rich learning.

Tamariki develop fine motor skills through peeling, spreading, and scooping. They gain a strong sense of mana motuhake (independence and confidence) as they take part in caring for themselves. As we kōrero together during the activity, children grow their understanding of reo, learning new words and how to express their ideas.

The Toddler Chef Programme also introduces early pāngarau and pūtaiao (math and science) concepts—measuring, counting, noticing textures and changes in food. Tamariki also experience manaakitanga—learning how to care for themselves and others through food and shared moments.

These everyday experiences align closely with our centre vision. By trusting tamariki, supporting their independence, and providing real-world opportunities to grow, we’re not just teaching life skills—we’re inspiring growing minds every day.
