Leadership in Action!

Leadership has been a big focus across our spaces lately, and it has been wonderful to see our tamariki stepping up, sharing their ideas and discovering the many ways they can be leaders in their own learning.

For us, leadership isn't just about being in charge. It's about having the confidence to share ideas, make decisions, take responsibility, support others and recognise that everyone has something valuable to contribute.

We've been seeing this emerge naturally through child-initiated learning, where tamariki are taking the lead and showing us what they are capable of. One of our lovely examples has been children choosing to lead their own mat times! Whether they're sharing a song, suggesting a game, asking questions or guiding their friends through an activity, these moments provide wonderful opportunities to build confidence, communication skills and a sense of belonging. When we give children the space to take ownership, we show them that their voices matter.

Our recent Bike Day was another fantastic opportunity to explore leadership in action! Through riding, navigating the space, taking turns and sharing the experience with their peers, tamariki had opportunities to practise responsibility, independence and respect for others. Children could learn from one another, offer encouragement, demonstrate safe choices and take pride in what they could do. These everyday experiences help children understand that leadership also means being a thoughtful and supportive member of a group.

These experiences link beautifully with our Set for School programme and the skills that support a positive transition to primary school. As children approach this next exciting stage, we want them to develop more than academic knowledge. We want them to feel confident to have a go, communicate their needs, make decisions, solve problems, work alongside others and take increasing responsibility for themselves. Through leading mat times, organising their play and participating in shared experiences like Bike Day, tamariki are developing these important foundations in meaningful, play-based ways. They are practising listening, expressing ideas, following and sharing responsibility, negotiating with peers and becoming increasingly independent learners. Most importantly, we are learning that leadership looks different for every child. For some, it might be confidently standing in front of their friends; for others, it might be inviting someone into a game, helping a peer or sharing an idea with a kaiako. Every step counts! As kaiako, our role is to notice these moments, encourage children's initiative and provide opportunities for all tamariki to experience leadership in ways that feel meaningful to them. We are so proud to see our tamariki growing in confidence, taking ownership of their learning and discovering that they can make a positive difference within their learning community. Because leadership starts with feeling loved, valued and confident enough to have a go.
