Literacy is one aspect of our Set for School programme here in Prep room Halswell Road. We explore literacy not just in regards to letters and writing but as a much broader concept. It is part of our daily routine for tamariki to become familiar with recognising their name, they do this by finding their name on the wall and moving it to show they are here today. We also promote and support tamariki to join in with retelling stories, explore letter sounds, rhyming words, music, symbol recognition and share their voice within small and large groups, to not only enhance literacy learning but also concentration, memory, comprehension and curiosity.

During mat times we encourage tamariki to grow their confidence to share their voice whether this is through playing games such as I spy, animal guessing games or through practicing introducing themselves, how old they are and their favourite colour etc. At home there is lots you can do to support literacy learning too such as when you read books with your child stop and explore the pictures together, highlight words which rhyme or start with the same letter sounds.

With favourite books encourage your child to retell the story themselves or retell it together sharing one page each. When your out and about look at symbols such as road signs or look at the first letter of names on grocery items, sing songs together with and without the music.
