This week, our preschool has been buzzing with excitement as Tamariki prepared for our special Matariki celebration.

Throughout the week, they engaged in a variety of creative activities that helped them learn about the significance of Matariki — the Māori New Year and a time for reflection, connection, and new beginnings.

Children explored paper weaving, carefully threading colourful strips to create beautiful patterns. They also made glittery stars using popsicle sticks and decorated paper lanterns, showing focus, creativity, and pride in their work.

Once completed, we hung the stars and lanterns around our preschool room, transforming the space into a vibrant celebration of Matariki. This morning, we welcomed our preschool whānau to join in the festivities. Parents sat alongside their children to colour Matariki stars together, creating special keepsakes to take home.

It was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our connections and share in the joy of learning together. To finish off the celebration, everyone enjoyed a warm bowl of soup and freshly baked bread prepared by our centre chef.

It was a heart-warming way to come together as a community, reflect on the past, and look forward to new beginnings under the Matariki stars.
