Matariki at BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy was a beautiful celebration of learning, culture, and whanaungatanga. Tamariki explored the meaning of Matariki through stories, songs, creative projects, and a special day shared with their families.
At BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, we celebrated Matariki with our tamariki (children), whānau (families), and kaiako (teachers) in a week filled with learning, reflection, and joy.
Matariki marks the Māori New Year and is a special time to remember the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. Throughout the week, our tamariki engaged in rich experiences to learn about the meaning of Matariki.
We shared pūrākau (Māori stories), sang waiata (songs), and created beautiful Matariki star art and kites. The children learned about the nine stars of Matariki and what each one represents—such as food, wellbeing, and the environment.
Our centre was decorated with stars and children’s artwork to symbolise the hope and purpose of the celebration.
Families supported us by providing ingredients for making soup and fried bread for the shared kai (food), joining in with karakia, and participating in our celebration day with songs and storytelling. It was a meaningful time to come together as a community.
At BestStart Johnstones Road, we honour Te Ao Māori every day through te reo Māori, tikanga practices, and a localised curriculum. Celebrating Matariki helps our tamariki connect to the land, people, and culture of Aotearoa.
Ngā mihi o Matariki – Happy Māori New Year!
