Matariki at BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, our early learning and childcare centre in Ōtara, was a beautiful celebration of learning, culture, and whanaungatanga. Tamarariki explored the meaning of Matariki through stories, songs, creative projects, and a special celebration shared with their whānau.
At BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, we celebrated Matariki with our tamariki, whānau, and kaiako in a week filled with learning, reflection, and joy. Through meaningful early learning experiences, children explored the traditions and significance of the Māori New Year while strengthening their connection to te ao Māori.
Matariki marks the Māori New Year and is a special time to remember the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. Throughout the week, our tamariki engaged in rich experiences to learn about the meaning of Matariki.
We shared pūrākau (Māori stories), sang waiata (songs), and created beautiful Matariki star art and kites. The children learned about the nine stars of Matariki and what each one represents—such as food, wellbeing, and the environment.
Our centre was decorated with stars and children’s artwork to symbolise the hope and purpose of the celebration.
Families supported us by providing ingredients for making soup and fried bread for the shared kai (food), joining in with karakia, and participating in our celebration day with songs and storytelling. It was a meaningful opportunity for children, families, and teachers to come together, strengthening the sense of belonging and community that is at the heart of our centre.
At BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, we honour te ao Māori every day through te reo Māori, tikanga, and our localised curriculum. Celebrating Matariki helps our tamariki strengthen their connection to the land, people, and culture of Aotearoa while fostering respect, belonging, and a lifelong love of learning.
Ngā mihi o Matariki – Happy Māori New Year!
