Here at BestStart Morrinsville, we have taken on the priority of enhancing math learning and math language.

We have upgraded our resources to include more math-based learning experiences, including small objects, number puzzles, sequence games and more.

We have noticed a much higher engagement with mathematics in both our tamariki and our kaiako. Kaiako are using more intentional language when doing daily routines such as baking experiences, building, and tidying.

Tamariki are more aware of when an experience is maths-focused, and they have a deeper understanding of the concept, including recognising numbers in print, counting to 20 or above, and matching te reo Maaori numbers to English numbers.

Mathematics is a huge part of our set for school program, and we work closely with our local kura to be more well informed of how our tamariki can be best prepared for when they turn five and head off to kura.

We try to make our experiences seamless with kura to support their transitions, while also ensuring they are age and stage-appropriate. We feel that we have made a huge improvement for our tamariki and we are continuing to extend their knowledge to support the best possible outcomes for them.
