Over the past few weeks, tamariki in the prep room have been practicing meditation. The idea of meditation came from a tamariki who once shared her aim to climb Mount Everest (the highest peak in the world). She added that to climb the peak she needed lots of energy. We discussed about; to gain energy and stamina she can do meditation.

We decided to give meditation a try during one of our mat times. One tamariki asked us to play mountain music for meditation. We did some research and found some nice and calm music. Kaiako in the prep room noticed that tamariki have been doing meditation throughout their day, both inside and outside.

We have been encouraging tamariki to meditate for a few minutes during the day. During the meditation, some tamariki chose to sit down for a few minutes to breathe slowly. Some tamariki use hand gestures to make themselves feel calm and relaxed.

To support their learning, we ask some questions after meditation such as “How are you feeling now?”, “Do you want to do meditation again?”, “Do you meditate at home/”, and “Did you see anything when you closed your eyes?”.

Here at BestStart Wainoni, we facilitate experiences for tamariki that nurture independence and confidence. Through using meditation as a self-awareness tool, Tamariki feel safe in surroundings. Meditation is enhancing tamariki social competence and building their empathy skills.
