On 21 January 2026, we held our Nature Scientist Day at BestStart Birkdale. Despite the turbulent weather, it was wonderful to see kaiako and tamariki fully engaged in intriguing scientific experiences within our classrooms.
Kaiako intentionally set up indoor provocations and gradually stepped back to observe where children’s natural curiosity would lead. Soon, thoughtful questions emerged, rich conversations unfolded, and with gentle guidance and support, tamariki discovered fascinating facts about honey bees.
As part of this learning, children created their own small beeswax candles to take home, sharing their joy and discoveries with their whānau. At lunchtime, tamariki requested a quiet candlelit lunch using one of their handmade candles, while the sound of heavy rain fell on the roof, creating a calm and reflective atmosphere.
The day concluded with delicious honey sandwiches for afternoon tea, thoughtfully prepared by our Centre Chef, Toni, who contributed to the learning alongside the kaiako. We finished the day with happy tummies, full hearts, and meaningful learning experiences that will stay with us.
