Nature sensory play in the Nursery
Our current room focus in our Kakano (Nursery) room has been sensory play and incorporating nature into this. Over the past few weeks the children have been enjoying investigating these different textures and natural resources.
We have done collage which involved painting glue onto paper and putting natural items such as leaves and sand to create art. This also supports children’s fine motor development, independence and creativity. We also did painting with our feet!
By laying down a large sheet of cardboard we sprinkled sand before the children stepped in paint and walk across the card. Feet are often forgotten and are a wonderful way to explore the sense of touch. The children really enjoyed this experience and were excited to get involved smiling as they did so.
On one occasion when we went outside to play we discovered some ice at the end of the slide. The children were very interested in this. To extend this further we froze some flowers and herbs into some cubes. The children experienced the freezing cold feel of the ice, then over the course of the morning watched as it melted and they could smell the herbs and flowers.
