Sharing our knowledge through puka puka
Recently we have been using books to share our ideas and knowledge with others. We had the animals and big books out on the table with the big books. This is part of our current group plan around being experts and learning about the natural world and sharing our knowledge with each other.
Many tamariki have spent a considerable amount of time and on multiple occasions naming the animals and pictures in the big books. It was such a pleasure to watch as the children shared the space and ensure that each person got a turn to share their expertise. Often if one of you didn't know what it was the other did and told your friend. If they didn't know they would say to me "what is this animal, Alice?" and then we would have a conversation about where it lived and what it ate etc
We have also had multiple discussions around dinosaurs and vehicles. There are several dinosaur experts in the class (not me!). During these experiences and discussions the children were able to share their knowledge with others and share the space. They knew the etiquette of conversations around turn taking, being the speaker and the listener.
To extend this learning I would like to encourage, with your support, the children to bring books or toys (purely for sharing) to daycare to share their ideas and knowledge of the natural, social, physical and material worlds. To give them confidence to engage in conversations with others and empower them as an expert.
