At BestStart Silverdale, we know moving from the baby room to the toddler environment is a big step. Our Transition to Toddlers evening gave whānau the chance to explore the space, ask questions, and feel supported every step of the way.

On 2 July, we held a Transition to Toddlers evening at our BestStart Silverdale centre. This was a wonderful opportunity to connect with whānau and support them through one of the most significant changes in their child’s early years—moving from the baby room to the toddler environment.

We recognise that this transition can feel big. The ratios change, and tamariki begin to share outdoor space with older children aged 2–5 years. To support this journey, we shared our gradual process: starting with short play visits, and then progressing to morning tea, lunch, and sleep times over one to two weeks. In preparation, our babies are also introduced to stretcher beds before the move.

Our team also discussed the concept of tuakana-teina, where older and younger tamariki support and learn from one another. This approach helps foster confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging.

Whānau were invited to explore the toddler classrooms, ask questions, and experience the daily provocations that inspire learning through curiosity and play.

The evening was a great success, with wonderful feedback from parents. Many left feeling reassured and confident, knowing their child’s transition into the toddler room would be a positive and well-supported experience.
