One of BestStart's 16 areas of play our tamariki always enjoy is engaging with Books and Storytelling/Pūrākau pānui pukapuka, tuhi, whakarongo, kōrero.

We are so lucky to have Marissa, a Librarian, visit us every term here at BestStart Girven Road.

Marissa is from Tauranga City Libraries and recently held an incredible story and waiata session with our tamariki. Children of all ages and kaiako came together for a colourful, fun mat time. Marissa took us on a colourful journey with scarves and dancing and our tamariki listened beautifully.

We are enjoying a lot of pūrākau about Māori culture and emotions and Marissa provided a responsive selection of books, with children helping choose which stories they wanted to hear. A big book about Dinosaurs was a great hit and lots of fun!

Reading, writing, listening and speaking support learning across all strands of Te Whāriki; our early learning curriculum in New Zealand. Sharing stories enhances children's sense of belonging, while books and storytelling encourage emotional discussions.

Books give children the chance to explore the world around them. The Communication strand supports children's literacy development, encouraging the development of verbal and non-verbal skills, cultural exploration and creative expression.

We love supporting our tamariki to grow a love for learning, books, literacy and storytelling.
