During the month of August the tamariki in the nursery room have had many adventures and celebrated some special days.
From the 17th of August until the 23rd of August was Tongan language week
The tamariki celebrated and learned about this culture through language, songs and art experiences. We implemented a word of the day so that we could broaden our Tongan language within the room. The children loved hearing new language being spoken by their teachers and some tried to say the words as well. The children also loved creating their special flower art with the paint sticks, choosing the colours used and being creative and expressive through this art experience.
Painting is a much loved activity in the nursery and we love to provide the children with the opportunity to allow their creative sides to shine. We also learned about Lalanga which is a cultural practice to weave mats, baskets and other items in Tonga. The children loved creating their own mats by weaving different lengths of paper by using glue sticks. They started by spreading the glue on their paper and then selecting which paper they would like. They then pressed the paper on to their glued area creating a weaving pattern. This was a really fun experience and it was great for developing the children’s fine motor skills, problem solving skills and allowing them to be expressive and creative through art.
We also celebrated Daffodil Day with a yellow dress up day. The whole centre was so bright with all of the yellow being worn. We let the children be creative with some daffodil colouring pictures. They loved this activity and loved getting covered in yellow paint! It has been such a busy and exciting month and we look forward to our September adventures!
