Rugby has been a strong interest with our 4 year old boys at the moment as most of them play Rippa Rugby on the weekends. While we were waiting for our new rippa tags to arrive, I thought we could play touch rugby instead.

Before we started, talked through the rules of the game and then it was time to play! Engaging in physical activities like touch rugby in early childhood education is crucial for young boys development. These activities not only enhance gross motor skills but also foster social interaction and team work. Te Whāriki encourages kaiako to provide diverse and stimulating experiences that promote holistic development, aligning perfectly with outdoor experiences and our rugby sessions.

Through these experiences, tamariki explore and understand concepts like turn-taking, cooperation and rule following, laying a strong foundation for their future learning journey. The tamariki have loved revisiting this experiences over the past couple of weeks and now that we have our rippa tags, it has made it even more fun! It is nice to see our younger tamariki having a turn as well with the guidance and support of our older tamariki. This is a great example of tuakana-teina relationships.
