Our tamariki recently enjoyed a wonderful adventure to the art gallery, where creativity, curiosity, and exploration were at the heart of the day.

The learning began even before we reached the gallery.

On our walk through the city, the children were given a special camera to capture the journey from their own point of view.

This gave them the opportunity to notice and photograph the things that caught their attention along the way. As we walked, the tamariki began spotting different art installations around the city. They excitedly pointed out interesting shapes, colours, patterns, and structures, sharing their ideas about what they thought the artworks looked like and what they might represent.

When we arrived at the art gallery, the children continued to explore art in many different forms. They were able to see how artists use a wide variety of materials to express their ideas and creativity. The tamariki discovered artworks made from tin, clay, ceramics, cardboard, and other materials, sparking many conversations about how ordinary objects can be transformed into something creative and meaningful.

The children were also encouraged to explore their own creativity by experimenting with different materials and thinking about the many ways they could create, design, and express their ideas. There was no single “right” way to create, allowing each child to use their imagination and make their own choices.

This experience supported the tamariki to observe their surroundings closely, share their ideas, take inspiration from the world around them, and appreciate different forms of artistic expression. Our visit reminded us that art is not only found inside a gallery.

It can be discovered on our streets, in everyday materials, and in the unique way each child sees the world. What a wonderful day of creativity, discovery, and inspiration!
