Visiting our local library at the Matatiki Hornby Centre
As part of our ongoing commitment to community involvement, a few children from the Pukeko Room recently embarked on an exciting visit to the local library. This excursion provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to explore the world of books, songs, and dance while fostering connections with our local community.
Upon arrival, the children were greeted by friendly library staff who guided them through the library's vibrant environment. The children eagerly explored various sections, picking out books to look at and enjoying the rich visual displays. The highlight of the visit was a fun-filled reading session where the librarian read aloud from a selection of picture books, capturing the children’s attention with engaging stories and colourful illustrations.
In addition to reading, the children participated in an interactive song and dance session. The lively music encouraged the children to move and express themselves freely, enhancing their language development and social skills as they sang and danced together. The session was not only entertaining but also educational, promoting physical coordination and fostering a sense of community and belonging. This library visit aligns beautifully with the principles of Te Whāriki, our early childhood curriculum.
One of the key strands of Te Whāriki is Belonging, where children develop a sense of belonging in the world around them. By visiting the library, the children experienced the joy of being part of the wider community, reinforcing their connection to the world beyond the centre. Furthermore, the experience nurtured the Communication strand, as the children engaged in conversations, listened to stories, and participated in group activities, all of which are essential to their growing language and social skills.
Overall, the visit to the library was a successful and enriching experience, reinforcing the importance of community connections in early childhood education.
