Watching the hoiho on race day!
Kia ora, 你好, ආයුබෝවන්, and hello. A few weeks ago, we embarked on our first excursion here at Beststart Riccarton Park. The kaiako and tamariki have been so excited waiting for the day to arrive.
The tamariki went on a nice short hikoi (walked) to our spot where we sat and watched the hoiho (horses) race. The tamariki were waving to everyone they saw, and we even had lots of motokā (cars) stop and say kia ora to us which was very miharo (awesome).
We all had a kōrero about what we could see, hear, feel, and touch and the tamariki loved describing their experience to us. "I have felt a horse before, it was nice and newanewa (soft)", a tamiti said to another hoa (friend). "I have riden a horse before at a farmyard", a tamaiti said excitedly to the group.
We loved exploring out in our new hapori (community) and enjoyed finding out about the whenua (land) in this place. The tamariki loved finding a new buddy to hikoi with to and from our spot and they were able to make connections with tamariki they normally don't play with. We can't wait for our next journey in the hapori!
