Preparing each of our tamariki for school starts from the very first day here at BestStart Fairy Springs. Upon turning four, each of our tamariki have a learning plan created for them linked to our "Set for School Areas of Focus". These valuable skills are supportive of a smooth transition to school.

Goals are reviewed on a termly basis, and progress is captured and documented. Here in the Discovery Room, linking to our Centre Vision of "working in partnership with our whanau, together as a team to encourage our tamariki to grow their independence, imagination and self-confidence skills, while seeing each of them as an individual to support their success and growth through driving their own learning", we have set up our "Set for School Room" to support this.

Having available a range of resources and activities, tamariki are encouraged to select for themselves, taking them to one of our many learning areas, (either at a table or on the floor), before commencing their mahi. They know it's their choice whether they do this as individuals, or involve their friends as well. Learner confidence is one of the areas of focus and they are encouraged to become self-motivated to engage in and enjoy learning, demonstrating that they are in control of their own learning.

They know that the room teacher is available to encourage, support and guide them as required. Learning moments are captured and photos are displayed throughout our room, supporting and encouraging our children to not only be proud of their achievements but also revisit their learning. Learning not only aligns with our Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whariki, but also the New Zealand Curriculum.

If you want to know more about how they align through the 16 Areas of Play, BestStart has created a series of videos that focuses on how they link to the school curriculum. We invite you to take the time to watch these on YouTube. You're welcome to visit our Centre anytime, and we can show you the valuable learning towards being set for school for your tamariki, that occurs here daily.
