We have been loving learning about our names and the letters of our names in the infant room lately!
The tamariki have shown a growing interest in recognising their names in their classroom and during learning experiences.
They love spotting the letters that belong to them or their friends and kaiako. Some of our older tamariki have started to point out the first letter of their name or make sounds that match it, showing early literacy awareness.
These learning moments show how interested they are in letters and how their early communication and literacy skills are starting to shine through in fun, playful ways. Our kaiako have been excited to share this interest by providing opportunities for the children to extend their learning by adding their names in painting experiences and mark-making experiences, so they can begin to recognise and connect letters in fun and meaningful ways.
We have been exploring writing and mark-making by using crayons and pens to practise holding tools and making lines, squiggles, and circles. These experiences help strengthen their fine motor skills while supporting early communication and literacy development.
It’s been so exciting watching the children’s excitement when they find or say their names, showing pride in their growing identity and confidence in communicating who they are.
