Why We Play In All Weather!

You may have noticed your tamaiti coming home having enjoyed some outdoor adventures in the rain or the chilly weather.

We’d love to share why we embrace all-weather play, and why it’s such an important part of your child’s learning and development here at our centre.

At the heart of our practice is Te Whāriki, which reminds us that children learn best through play, exploration, and connection with the natural world.

Outdoor play (whether it’s sunshine, wind, or rain) provides rich, real-life experiences that support physical, emotional, social and cognitive growth. Through BestStart’s 16 Areas of Play, we support tamariki to take part in nature play, movement, risk-taking, and creative exploration in ways that are empowering and child-led.

Giving children the freedom to make choices in their play nurtures confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging. We also want to gently reassure you: children do not get sick from getting wet or playing in cold weather - illnesses are caused by viruses and bacteria, not rain or mud.

We make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, and if they do get wet or muddy, we change them into warm, dry clothes. Our kaiako are there every step of the way - observing, guiding and ensuring safety while also respecting each child’s right to choose how and where they play.

We ask that our team be treated with respect when they support this approach. Every decision made around weather play is thoughtful and based on best practice, professional knowledge and a deep commitment to your child’s well-being.

Thank you for trusting us to support your child’s journey. We are always happy to kōrero further if you have any questions about our philosophy or practices.
