This week, we joyfully celebrated Chinese New Year together at preschool - and what a vibrant, colourful week it has been!
At mat time, we explored different customs and traditions in China. Tamariki learned to sing “Happy New Year” in both English and Mandarin, discovered the 12 zodiac animals, and listened carefully to the exciting story of the monster Nian and why loud noises and bright red decorations are so important.
We also watched and talked about the spectacular dragon dance - what a powerful and energetic tradition! Children explored traditional dancing using beautiful round fans and even created their own unique dance moves. The room was full of rhythm, movement, and creativity.
Of course… dumpling making was a BIG hit again! 🥟 Everyone remembered our special sealing chant: “Crocodile, crocodile, snap, snap, snap!” And yes - we had to sing it three times to make sure the dumplings were sealed properly!
There was also plenty of arts and crafts:
- ✨ Good luck posters
- 🏮 Red lanterns
- 🧩 Zodiac animal puzzles
- 🎨 Festive decorations everywhere
Throughout the week, tamariki showed so much excitement about learning more about the world — different languages, cultures, people, and places. These experiences help build curiosity, respect, and a sense of belonging in our diverse community. We are growing into little global citizens — ready to explore our big, beautiful world together. 🌏❤️
