At BestStart Montel Avenue, we love following our tamariki’s interests — and recently, LEGO play has taken centre stage in our Preschool Room! What began as casual creativity has become a powerful learning tool that sparks imagination, problem-solving, and collaboration.
In the Preschool Room, we have noticed that our tamariki are captivated by LEGO play. Whether they are building towering castles, intricate vehicles, or imaginative landscapes, their enthusiasm for constructing and creating is inspiring!
To nurture this growing interest, we introduced a dedicated LEGO table exclusively for LEGO play. The response has been incredible — our tamariki are thoroughly enjoying this new space where they can bring their ideas to life.
LEGO play is much more than just fun; it is a powerful learning experience that supports multiple areas of development. Fine motor skills are strengthened as children grasp, connect, and manipulate the small bricks, refining their hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity.
Problem-solving skills are enhanced as they experiment with different structures, troubleshoot when pieces don’t fit as expected, and develop strategies to bring their visions to reality. Additionally, LEGO fosters emotional resilience, as tamariki learn patience and perseverance when their designs don’t go as planned, encouraging a growth mindset.
Through this open-ended play, children naturally explore mathematical concepts such as size, area, symmetry, patterns, and balance. They begin to understand spatial relationships and cause-and-effect reasoning, all while engaged in hands-on discovery.
LEGO play also provides a creative outlet for storytelling, allowing tamariki to express their ideas and narratives that may still be difficult to articulate in words. Whether they are building alone or collaborating with friends, they are developing communication and social skills, negotiating ideas, sharing resources, and celebrating each other’s achievements.
