BestStart Tory Street is a richly diverse early learning centre in Wellington’s CBD providing education and childcare for children aged 2-5. We love building relationships with our multicultural community and incorporate it into our programme. We offer full days as well as morning and afternoon sessions.

Our Vision:  Celebrating the universal languages of our vibrant city

We bring together children, whanau and teachers from the many cultures of our city.  We learn, dream and celebrate together through the universal languages of discovery, music, dance, food, creativity and play.  BestStart Tory Street is known for incorporating cultures into our programme.  We provide a learning rich environment for individual children as well as focus on group interests.

The teaching team support our toddler whānau and they are encouraged to explore, know about their world and increase their independence to have more control with the support of our amazing kaiako (teachers) sensitive to their needs.  We support our pre-schoolers here where they are encouraged to think, problem solve, discuss, take calculated risks, develop independence, social and leadership skills. We also encourage our older tamariki (children) to support our younger tamariki – these relationships are so valuable and such a great way to role model and learn.

We value your culture.  Our environment is nurturing and caring so you can feel confident about your child’s surroundings as they learn.  The verbal and non-verbal communication of your child will be valued and respected.  Your child will be involved in cultural celebrations such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, Matariki and many more.

We endeavour to take the children on walks around our vibrant city and will visit the local schools to support transition to school.

Our philosophy

  • Our practice is founded on the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • We embrace diversity in culture
  • In establishing a collaborative, respectful relationship with tamariki whanau and the community
  • In providing a learning rich environment that caters for individual learning needs
  • Our environment is designed and organised in ways that foster interactions, explorations, curiosity and communication
  • Children are empowered to be lifelong learners through all aspects of the curriculum

We would love to get to know you and your family.  We welcome you to come and visit us to find out more.

kind words from our parents

The team of ladies have been more than great help with my son being new to early years it has been a hard road for him to adjust. They have been patient and he now looks forward to going. When I go to pick up my son I’m greeted in Maori which I find really good about that. They are very culturally aware, they have all nationalities there and teach the kids about the different cultures which is awesome.

The centre is doing an excellent job. My daughter is progressing every day. The teachers are very supportive, helpful and warm and it is so nice to see the stories and see what our kids do when they are at their second home.

Staff are friendly and very good in maintaining communication and updating kids improvements to family. After sending my child to the centre he feels confident in English, he is learning the language very well there. Additionally my child is quiet and takes time to open up to new persons, but the staff made him so comfortable there that he loves to go.

We want you to you know how grateful we are to have you all as Akithma’s teacher for the last two and a half years. Thank you for creating and environment of enthusiasm for learning, appreciation for growing and room for making mistakes along the way for Akithma. We were happily looking at her growing as a knowledgeable, confident person. We are really happy that Akithma had the best teachers in her early childhood education. On the way home from school on her last day, Akithma said “Ohhh I am never going to see Sarah-Rose baby or Kyla growing up or Jess’ next cat book” I think that is more than enough to show that you are a second family to her.
