What does ‘qualified teacher’ mean in early childhood education?

Updated 12 October 2026

Email this answerEmail

A qualified early childhood teacher has completed a recognised teaching qualification and is registered with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Qualifications provide teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to support children at different stages of development, including infancy. Ongoing professional learning also helps teachers stay up to date with current research, teaching practices and care approaches.

At BestStart, we aim to maintain a workforce where at least 80% of teachers are qualified early childhood educators. Our teachers also participate in ongoing professional development to strengthen their knowledge and support high-quality teaching and care.

Good to know

  • Qualified teachers must meet professional standards set by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Registration isn’t permanent – teachers are expected to maintain and develop their professional practice over time.
  • Registration helps ensure teachers meet professional standards for safety, ethics and teaching practice.
