What happens if my baby gets sick at childcare?

If your baby becomes unwell while at childcare, teachers will provide immediate care, closely monitor their condition and contact you if they need to be collected. Responding promptly to illness helps ensure children receive the care and support they need while reducing the spread of infection to others.

Young children can become unwell quickly, so it is important that symptoms are observed, families are kept informed and appropriate action is taken when needed. Depending on the situation, this may include providing comfort, offering fluids, monitoring symptoms or seeking additional medical advice.

At BestStart, teachers keep unwell children comfortable in a quiet, supervised space while maintaining close observation. Parents or caregivers are contacted promptly and may be asked to collect their child if they are too unwell to participate comfortably in the programme. Where necessary, we follow health guidelines and seek advice from Healthline or emergency services.

Good to know

  • Make sure your centre always has up-to-date emergency contact details so teachers can reach you quickly if your child becomes unwell.
  • Many illnesses are most contagious before symptoms become obvious, which is why good hygiene practices are important for everyone in the centre community.
  • If your child has recently been unwell, check with your centre before returning to ensure any exclusion periods have been met.
