As a part of our summer holiday programme here at Beststart Morrinsville, we thought it would be a good idea to take our tamariki to the Hamilton Zoo. This was our second time taking our tamariki to the zoo and they are always super excited as we kōrero about it all year round.

While at the zoo, we continue to enact our centre philosophy of 'we are all leaders' as we create mixed age, groups to provide leadership opportunities for our older tamariki to take care of our pēpi by keeping themselves and others safe. Some of the learning that happened while on this excursion was vehicle safety while traveling in a bus, active listening and engagement with kaiako, parents, and the animals at the zoo, learning to care for our environment, and safety in the community.

Our tamariki love their zoo experience, and we know this because we see the animals reflected in their imaginative play, art, and creations. We extend on this learning by reading and watching stories and videos of different animals from around the world and incorporating these experiences into teacher lead experiences as well as setting up the environment for creative purposes.

We aim to make this zoo trip annual for each summer holiday as we have seen the wealth of positive learning outcomes for our tamariki.
