Celebrating Filipino Language and Culture Month at BestStart Kensington Crossing

On the 30th August, we celebrated the end of Filipino language month by inviting all our Filipino families for an afternoon where they were able to share a little bit about their culture with our tamariki and kaiako at the centre.

Kensington Crossing is a multi-cultural centre with a lot of Filipino families. Our Filipino families all got together and planned an amazing afternoon of activities, teaching us a song; performed by both our Filipino children and their parents (much like the kiwi version of heads, shoulders, knees and toes), dances; which we all enjoyed joining in on and games; throw the "slipper" at a can, that the families remembered growing up themselves in the Phillipines.

We also shared a beautiful array of Filipino food, both sweet and savory delights in a centre picnic afternoon tea in the sunshine. Strengthening connections with whanau is very important to us at BestStart Kensington Crossing and this cultural event was a great way to acknowledge and value our Filipino famailies language, identity and culture, and make connections between the home and centre visible and meaningful for our Filipino children.

The feedback from the kaiako, the families and the children was amazing and we can't wait to celebrate Onem in September.
