At BestStart Waikanae, we love celebrating the rich cultural diversity of our centre—and Filipino Language Week was a vibrant, joyful highlight for our tamariki, kaiako, and whānau!

Throughout the week, our tamariki explored the beauty of Filipino culture through hands-on activities, language learning, and traditional games.

They created colourful collages of the Filipino flag, learning the meaning behind each colour—white for equality, blue for peace and justice, and red for patriotism. These conversations sparked curiosity and respect for the values that shape Filipino identity. Language was another exciting focus.

Our tamariki practised greetings and counting in Filipino, learning phrases like “Kumusta” (Hello), “Salamat” (Thank you), and “Magandang umaga” (Good morning). It was heartwarming to see their confidence grow as they embraced a new language with enthusiasm. Traditional Filipino games brought laughter and energy to our centre. The classic party game Pabitin had tamariki jumping with delight as they reached for hanging treats. They also explored traditional toys like the yo-yo and trumpo (spinning tops), discovering their cultural significance and history in the Philippines.

Our celebration culminated in a special afternoon event where whānau joined us to enjoy delicious Filipino dishes lovingly prepared by our amazing Filipino kaiako. The colourful “Jeepney” photo booth was a hit, capturing the spirit of the celebration and creating lasting memories for all. At BestStart Waikanae, we believe in the power of cultural celebration to foster belonging, empathy, and global awareness. Events like Filipino Language Week help our tamariki grow into confident, respectful citizens of the world.
