Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, holds immense significance in Hindu culture but is also celebrated by people of various other religions and backgrounds. The festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is commemorated with the lighting of diyas (lamps), fireworks, and delicious feasts.

At BestStart Onehunga, we embrace and promote diversity by educating our children about different cultures and their traditions. Celebrating Diwali allows our tamariki to learn about and appreciate the customs and beliefs of others, fostering a sense of inclusivity and respect within our centre.

This year, our Diwali celebration took place on 25 October. The day was filled with joy and excitement for the children. They dressed in colourful cultural attire and participated in traditional Diwali activities such as creating rangoli patterns and making diyas. Through these experiences, the children gained a deeper understanding of the significance of Diwali and developed an appreciation for people from different backgrounds.

The atmosphere was vibrant and lively, with the centre adorned with bright decorations. Our Diwali celebration was a testament to our commitment to fostering a multicultural environment where every child feels valued and respected. By engaging in these cultural activities, the children not only enjoyed a fun-filled day but also took home valuable lessons about diversity and inclusion.

We look forward to continuing our tradition of celebrating Diwali and other cultural festivals, ensuring that our tamariki develop a broad and empathetic worldview.

Happy Diwali to all! Let us continue to learn from one another's traditions and embrace the beauty of diversity that enriches us all.
