Emotional Regulation
Managing feelings is a big area of learning for tamariki and we are conscious to be intentional in our teaching here in Prep room Haslwell Road to ensure we support tamariki through their social and emotional learning journey. We support tamariki to be able to label feelings, to know everyone feels all emotions and then how they can begin to navigate these feelings and regulate themselves with strategies.
We explore feelings through books, puzzles, games, art, sociodramatic play and more to offer many opportunities to learn and practice. We encourage strategies such as rocket breathes, smell the flower, blow out the candle, count to 5, have a drink of water, find a quiet space, ask for help from a teacher etc. We also focus on supporting social skills and how to navigate play together as we find these can be the cause of big emotions so we support the development of turn taking, waiting, sharing, asking for a turn, sharing their voice and telling others how they feel to support emotional development too.
We also promote tamariki independence and self-confidence to nurture them to feel they can have a go, persevere and challenge themselves, giving them time and encouragement, as this supports the development of regulation too. When tamariki see the adults in their lives regulating them own emotions this has a big positive impact on their own learning and development.
Here at Halswell road we love the book ‘The rainbow in my heart’ it sparks many learning opportunities for us, a great one to add to your home library!
