Numeracy
Numeracy learning here in Prep room Halswell Road explores a wide range of numeracy concepts from number symbols and counting to patterns, grouping items which are similar or different, tipping and pouring, size, shape, exploring rulers, die, balance scales and more. Tamariki are supported and encouraged to join in with many learning experiences and games which explore these numeracy concepts such as snakes and ladders, threading beads in patterns, arts and crafts using shapes to create college buses or flowers, creating pictures with geometric blocks and so on.
Alongside these experiences we also have a wide range of construction resources which support tamariki learning and development of numeracy concepts such as gravity, balance, weight, height, shape, measurement, counting, angles etc. We support tamariki to learn the terminology of the numeracy concepts they are exploring too. At home the ways you can support your child’s numeracy learning is through baking or cooking together through this experience your child explores measuring, weight, height, tipping and pouring etc or building/carpentry with blocks or real wood to explore balance, shape, counting, measurement etc.
Playing board games together as a family is another great way to develop numeracy skills of using a die, number symbols, counting and more!
