Preschoolers are natural explorers, and excursions are a wonderful way for them to connect with their environment and community.

At BestStart Buchanans, children look forward to regular walks to Broomfield Common Reserve, where they build physical skills, curiosity, and a love for Papatūānuku (Mother Earth).

Guided by the concept of kaitiakitanga (guardianship), these outings nurture respect and care for the natural world. Tamariki notice the rustling leaves, birdsong, and earthy scents around them, while learning to observe their surroundings — the houses, structures, and people they encounter along the way.

Through these experiences, children develop key skills in problem-solving, spatial awareness, and cause-and-effect thinking. Sharing observations and ideas with peers promotes social skills, communication, and cooperation. These learning opportunities connect to Te Whāriki’s strands of Exploration (Mana Aotūroa) and Contribution (Mana Tangata).

Excursions also reflect our centre philosophy. Teachers intentionally stimulate children’s play and learning by creating opportunities that are not only fun, but deeply meaningful. Strong, responsive relationships with kaiako foster wellbeing and emotional security, supporting Belonging (Mana Whenua) and helping children feel safe, connected, and empowered as capable learners.

We value and celebrate the rich diversity within our community, believing every child and whānau brings something unique and exciting to our centre. By exploring together, children develop empathy, respect, and a sense of identity. Regular excursions provide opportunities for tamariki to engage with their local environment, build resilience, and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the people and world around them.
