Ni sa Bula Vinaka!!! At our centre, Language Weeks are more than just a celebration, they’re a journey into culture, identity, and connection through project-based learning.
This year, for Fijian Language Week, we explored two iconic treasures of Fiji: the Pacific Ocean 🌊 and the coconut 🥥
During our integrated celebration mat time, tamariki were fascinated as we demonstrated how to open and scrape a coconut, a hands-on experience that sparked rich conversations about how coconuts are used across cultures around the world 🌍.
From food and drink to tools and traditions, the coconut showed us its incredible versatility and importance. We sang 🎶 traditional Fijian songs, played games (Tin-Pani), and dressed in beautiful, vibrant colours to honour the joyful spirit of the Island Nation of Fiji. The centre was filled with laughter, music, and movement, a true celebration of Pacific pride.
Through these experiences, our tamariki didn’t just learn about Fijian culture, they lived it. They asked questions, made connections, and celebrated the richness of the Pacific in ways that were meaningful and memorable. Vinaka vakalevu to everyone who contributed to this beautiful celebration.
Fijian Language Week reminded us of the power of culture to bring us together, and the importance of keeping our Pacific languages and traditions alive for future generations.
