Ngā tamariki in the Tūī Room have been busy exploring kites this week.

On windy days, here in Canterbury, they noticed they couldn’t use some outdoor resources, so they came up with creative ways to play instead.

Many children remembered the kite making they did for Matariki, this was great recollection of their past learning. Many tamariki shared that they had kites at home too, they talked about times with their families, having fun and flying kites, especially at the beach.

Together, we had a kōrero about how we could make kites at preschool. Everyone helped to gather materials, and with ice block sticks, ribbon, colouring pencils and cellotape, we worked as a team to build our own kites. The children showed great teamwork and good communication, asking each other and the teacher for help when needed.

There was lots of excitement as we took our kites outside to test them in the wind! We loved seeing the kites fly and sharing this fun learning experience together. Through this kite making experience, the children developed their problem-solving skills by thinking about how kites work and what makes them fly. They practiced fine motor skills as they connected and decorated their kites. We talked about how the wind can make things move, bringing in science ideas in a hands-on way.

Each child showed curiosity and willingness to try new things, which is an important part of our emergent curriculum. Working together also helped strengthen friendships and encouraged everyone to share their ideas.
