At BestStart Botany Junction, our Local Curriculum comes alive with regular walks to the local Rest Home. Tamariki enjoy songs, activities, and meaningful connections, while learning the value of community, aroha, and making memories with others.
As part of our Local Curriculum, our tamariki have been excitedly anticipating our fortnightly walks to our local Rest Home. The freedom to walk safely in our community alongside our caring kaiako allows our children to create special memories with our older tipuna.
We always begin by talking about safety, holding hands, and listening to teachers before making the trek to the rest home. We high five the receptionist before heading up in the lift. Once upstairs, we go around and introduce ourselves, shake hands, and meet some of the residents.
Together, we sing songs, do some colouring, complete puzzles, and of course, stop to pick flowers on the way back to BestStart Botany Junction.
These trips give our tamariki the chance to practise social interactions by introducing themselves and making conversation with others. They also experience the joy of bringing joy to others, building relationships, and learning more about where we live. Sometimes, we even run into parents who work there—always a highlight!
We hope you’ll join us on our next community trip.
