Niuean Language Week!
During Niuean Language Week, tamariki celebrated and explored the culture and language of Niue. They had the opportunity to learn about Niuean artwork, specifically the traditional Hiapo designs, by exploring different colours and painting Hiapo patterns. Tamariki also learnt the song “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” in Niuean and gained an understanding of the Niuean flag. Additionally, they picked up some phrases and learnt how to count in Niuean!
This was a fantastic opportunity for kaiako to promote Niuean Language Week to tamariki. It helped spark their curiosity, motivate them, and enhance their enjoyment of learning. The experience encouraged open-mindedness, which in turn supported tamariki in becoming more culturally aware. By exploring different cultures, as they did during Niuean Language Week, tamariki learned to respect and value diverse languages and traditions.
During mat times, tamariki were able to ask questions and express themselves, using their voices with confidence. Learning to sing in Niuean was so exciting for them that they wanted to keep singing. They eagerly contributed to exploring the culture, learning the language, and interacting with their peers. Together, tamariki created a positive atmosphere where they could grow and thrive while learning Niuean. They felt empowered by this enriching experience at the centre.
