Last week we took the opportunity to go and visit the Community Gardens at South Alive
It was such a sunny day and our tamariki were so excited to get into the pram and go for a walk!
On the way we waved to the people we saw, said "ooooh" when we saw trucks go past, and we even saw a dog! Once we got to the garden we saw one of our tamaiti's Nona and Koro, She got to give them a hug!
Then we did a little bit of weeding. Each child took turns to pull out some and put them into the compost bin. We picked some flowers to sniff and look at, and we noticed the other flowers in other parts of the garden as well.
Visiting the Community garden supports our current group planning of Whanaungatana/Relationships. Part of this is connection, and a sense of belonging. By being a part of looking after our garden and being out in the community tamariki are learning about interdependence - how everyone in the group has a role to play in caring for the environment.
Tasks like weeding, and working together in the garden links to Te Whāriki through the strand Mana tangata/Contribution, where tamariki are learning how their efforts contribute to the well-being of the whole community. This also supports one of our centre priorities of Kaitiakitanga/Sustainability
