Here at Papanui we have begun our journey as kaitiaki/guardians of our outside environment.
We are so lucky as we have the most incredible outside space - trees, grasses, flower beds and plenty of space for growing!
Today we had Anita in, a local gardener who has come to help us begin our planting. Today Anita read to us a story about how we grow and chop vegetables to make vegetable soup. All of our tamariki were amazing at showing Anita that they knew their vegetables as she showed us some fantastic flash cards! We then took turns in digging the holes for our brocoli|pūhakeke, silverbeet|pākākano, lettuce|rīwai and carrots|karati. And what came next? WATER. All tamariki had a watering bottle and were so very careful to give their new little plants some all important nourishment. We feel so lucky to have this opportunity to grow vegetables and learn all about how to respect our outside enviornment too. We are learning new words as well as how to say these words in te reo Maori; working as a team to ensure we are being kind to ourselves, kind to each other and kind to our environment; our very important centre priority. Ka pai te mahi Papanui tamariki. Watch this space for our next session......
