Slow down your first hour

Slowing down the first hour of the day is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your child’s wellbeing. When mornings begin gently — without screens or rushing, and with time to wake slowly, stretch, cuddle, and move at their own pace — children receive a clear message: you are safe, you can settle, and you can breathe.

Children who start the day feeling regulated are better able to focus, play deeply, learn with confidence, connect with others, and manage their emotions. This gentle beginning lays the foundation for everything else that follows throughout their day.

This is why we place so much value on predictable routines here at the centre. When children know what is coming next and can trust the rhythm of their day, they feel secure. That sense of security allows them to explore, take risks, grow, and thrive.

If you want your child to do well in life, the truth is beautifully simple: slow down. Smell the roses. Talk together. Engage kanohi ki te kanohi — face to face, without screens in the way. When possible, leave the car behind and ask, “Where could we walk today, slowly, side by side, just enjoying each other’s company?”

Research shows that constantly being on the go keeps children’s brains in a heightened state of arousal, often linked with stress and anxiety. Little brains do not need constant stimulation. They need presence, connection, and time.

Modern media floods children with fast-paced images and quick dopamine hits, keeping nervous systems switched on. The antidote is wonderfully simple: go for a green walk, explore your neighbourhood, put screens away for a while, and enjoy the family you have created. You deserve that time together — and so does your child.
