In our Putangitangi room we regularly undertake a baking activity that provides afternoon tea for the centre every fortnight on a Thursday.

Kaiako value this experience as an opportunity to promote and implement our set for school programme in our 4 year old classroom.

This is a chance to undertake pre literacy skills around reading the ingredients on a recipe and labels, ingredients on the packets, also being able to include mathematical concepts such as measurement, volume, counting, tipping and pouring and weight of objects.

Nga Tamariki have a chance to use trial and error in determining how much is required of each ingredient and a chance to share their thoughts, ideas and questions with their peers and Kaiako. Throughout these experiences we as Kaiako are able to implement our classroom learning pioirities of "Set for School" and weaving in our resilience and mana enhancing curriculum.

Baking is a lovely way to link the home environment into our classroom with many of our tamariki sharing their baking stories from home again linking into pre literacy skills of storytelling and recalling past events. Nga tamariki also learn concepts around sharing, turn taking, patience, well- being and communication skills learning new words and phrases. A fun way to spend a morning in our Putangitangi class!
