How can I prepare my child for their first day of childcare?

Preparing your child for their first day of childcare is about helping them become familiar with a new environment before they start attending regularly. Familiar people, routines and comfort items can help make the transition smoother for both children and parents.

Many families find that settling visits, talking about childcare and gradually introducing new routines helps build confidence and reduce uncertainty. Sharing information about your child's routines, interests, preferences and care needs also helps teachers provide consistent support from the beginning.

At BestStart, we encourage settling visits so your child can get to know the centre, teachers and daily routines at their own pace. We also take time to learn about your family's routines and preferences, and we welcome questions and conversations throughout the settling process.

Good to know

  • Talking positively about childcare can help children feel more confident about the transition.
  • Sharing information about your child's interests, favourite activities and comfort strategies can help teachers build connections from day one.
  • Starting with shorter days may help some children adjust gradually to a new environment and routine.
